The advent of the internet has created many winners. Not the least of them the people who now work from home and focus on the gig economy. In a nutshell, the gig economy has made life so much better for those who have decided that daily travel to work is not their cup of tea.
Control Over Productivity
One of the chief advantages of the gig economy is that you control the amount of time you spend working and your level of productivity. Unlike a conventional employee who is beholden to a boss, a gig worker is an independent contractor who determines how much work he does at a given time.
Of course, the reality is most gig workers tend to work longer hours the ordinary employees. In the beginning, they have to make a name for themselves so they need to produce excellent work. In fact, when they get really successful sometimes they end up working more just to keep up with demand for their services.
Still, once the gig worker thinks he is successful enough he can call the breaks on his work. He can then choose to do only projects that interest him.
The Ultimate Flexi-time
Working in the gig economy means that the person is basically an independent contractor. In addition to determining his or her own working hours, they also decide when they will work. This means that they can schedule their work around other important life activities like attending school or taking care of kids.
Control over Location of Work
Perhaps the most important benefit of the gig economy is determining where one will work. A lot of people in the gig economy prefer to work from home or from coffee shops. A few like to rent “co-working” spaces where they can work in an office like environment.
In other words, most of them work where it is convenient for them. They have no need to endure long commutes.
Of course with this much freedom comes some necessary responsibility. The gig worker is responsible for his health and doesn’t have a company to give him sick leave. Hence health insurance is more important than ever to him.
