The suburbs are arguably the better place to settle down than to go downtown for your living. Here are five of the few reasons why I think you should live in the Suburbs instead of getting an apartment Downtown.
The Suburbs are Peaceful
Unless your suburb has the misfortune of being the site of a gang war, suburban areas are generally peaceful and quiet about the inner city. It is because there are fewer businesses or buildings in the suburbs. As a result, when night falls, the suburbs fall asleep, except for a handful of establishments that cater to the locals.
Housing Prices are Cheap
As a general rule when land prices are low, then as an effect the housing prices are low. Let’s face it rural land has lower commercial value because it has less foot traffic. As a result, you can buy a decent home in the Suburbs for a fraction of the price of a condo in the inner city.
The Neighborhood Watch
Some people view the neighborhood watch with derision. I think it is a good idea. When neighbors look after each other, they reinforce the sense of security in the neighborhood. Even better since the locals know that their neighbors are out and about patrolling they have even more disincentive to do something nasty.
As a bonus volunteering in the Neighborhood Watch is a good way to get some credibility with your neighbors as someone who is willing to help out.
People in the suburbs, generally speaking, are closer to each other than in the impersonal inner city. Thus, they like to come together to have themselves some weekend barbeque.
Now I’m not saying people in the inner city are not fond of their neighbors. But considering how little space they have in the inner city it is very difficult to set up a barbeque much less find room to have people to hang out and enjoy.
Freedom to Move Around
Perhaps my favorite reason to live in the suburbs is that there is plenty of room to move around. There is a lot of freedom of movement in the suburbs and not nearly as much traffic as in the inner city.
Imagine getting on your bike and just letting the wind blow in your hair as you bike carefree all around. It is just not possible in the inner city where you worry about getting hit by traffic.
Of course, once you decide to move to the suburbs, you should safeguard your house with home insurance just in case it isn’t as peaceful as I expected.
